Nobel Peace Prize for Al Gore?

I came across a piece in the Daily Telegraph that raises a question which was in my mind since I heard Al Gore’s Nobel Peace Prize winning news. What has he done for world peace?

The commentator who see seems to be no fan of Al Gore argues for a need to declare an intenational smugness alert.Read it here.

It woudln’t surprise me in the least that Al Gore won the prize.Global warming has every thing to do with world peace. One should into what the root causes of Darfur conflict, caused by land, climate and the like. And Gore’s film has helped to garner attention than anyone’s work so far.

Global warming is a fashion, something of a fad.Al Gore is the player, fake he might be.
The prize isn’t so much about him.It is about sending signal to Bush for not taking concrete actions against global warming.

I agree with the authour, Al Gore has not done anything for global warming, they should have given it to G Bush, at least he he helped it grow immensely in the last 6 or 7 years!

So Leanne, if you think GW is a fad, why should he take any concrete actions?

Yes it is a fad, with much politics involved to it than what is there on scientific discovery. It is outrageous to see any party is trying to play politics here.
Let us ward off global warming and the world turns into ice, are they going to put the blame on human beings?
But I don’t mean to imply that there isn’t real threat. And I resent Bush’s inaction as much as Gore’s action which I find nothing more than a publicity stunt. I am sick and tired of them both.

Hmm, you resent Bush’s inaction and also resent Gore’s action? So which side would you err on? I mean given all the testimonies by the experts around the world, the visual evidence coming out every year etc. would you say Gore is blowing hot air, no pun intended. Do you really think Gore is doing all this for a publicity stunt? Are you serious? What does he have to prove? Also, what is the politics side of it?

I’m not a big fan of Al, and who would forget “blackbox, internet invention speech”, however, when it comes to the enviroment issues, he has done a graet deal of favor to humanity just by creating awareness around the world, (i might add saying that with a help of his hollywood followers). The issue could be very controversial, but there’s undeniable facts infront of us. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if the issue is scientifically provable, Al Gore is a fad or not, the problem is under our eyes. Basically, enviroment toxins is killing us softly. We all witnessing the dramatic climate changes in Ethiopia, unless we shurg it off and blame the govt. Especially, underdevelped countries like Ethiopia should take a hard look before they open their door widely to the free market. Of course, the new buzz word is “China” which is unfriendly to any enviroment:-(

Sorry if i am not clear yet.
What I was trying to say was we need the sceintific clarity on thesubject of climate change.I am fearful that we live in an environment where some treat science as though it is politics. There not two sides to science.Rather science is understanding what is happening.
Sure it is geting warmer but when the Earth cools again-and it will-one’ll look very follish blaming than on man.
The politics side of Algore is…..something to find out when he is going to announce that he is going to run fot the presidency which we might hear soon.

Those of you who question how genuine Gore’s commtiment is missing a point. Why should he be?To be honest, who cares about his geniune political or moral commitment? He’s embraced a cause. The rest is pursuing it even if it is to supporter’s(to the public’s ) naive satisfaction.

    Leanne,
When i read your comment “…. the Earth cools again-and it will” i felt that i had to drop a few lines here. By no means i’m not enviromental issue activist, but i’ve to ask you basic 101 questions. Aren’t you a bit concerned that why these extreme climate changes disorder is happening (besides God) ? Not to mention regulations, law and other many contribution factors in Ethiopia, do you know how many acres forests are burning in daily basis just for household consumtions? And who’s burning it? All the gadgets we’ve in our pockets, all the junks surrounding us, is not falling down from the sky. We humans are making it, right? The good news is that even Ethiopian Govt. seems moving toward finding alternative energy so, the issue is at least on the table.
Obviously, Al Gore’s concerns are unprovable to you, but your deep suspicion proved to be you’re a ture Ethiopian (by the way, to a certain degree there’s nothing wrong with that). I guess, you’re seeing something in him what i don’t see. Oh, well! Poor Al Gore, he’s already lost one vote 🙂
