Baalu Girma Foundation formed

bealuIt was 25 years ago today that the famous Ethiopian writer and journalist, Baalu Girma, was abducted by the military junta Derg. He hasn’t been heard from since, but his legacy continues.

The Baalu Girma Foundation, established in his memory, has just been launched.

The foundation set up by his daughter Meskerem Baalu Girma “will strive to empower creative writers and journalists underrepresented in East Africa”, it was said.

“We are happy to announce that a foundation has been set up in the author’s name to advance his literary work and vision.”, wrote Meskerem.Find the web here.

Baaul Girma was one of the greatest and talented novelist, writer and journalist who were larger than life. A celebration of Baalu’s work and achievements is timely. Writers, whether they are journalists or creative writers, are able to put into words the hopes and aspirations of the generation in which they live. Bealu did just that. He has single-handedly inspired hundreds of Ethiopian writers to test Ethiopia’s ability to tolerate dissent and its willingness to respect the freedom of expression—the foundation on which the altar of democracy is built. Like him, many have paid with their lives. Baalu Girma left us six incredible novels but more important, a legacy of defiance, courage, and opposition to tyranny. I am reminded of James Baldwin’s comment “the obligation of anyone who thinks of him as responsible is to examine society and try to change it and to fight it—at no matter what risk. This is the only hope society has. This is the only ways societies change.”
It was more than 25 years ago that the famous Ethiopian writer and journalist, Baalu Girma, was abducted by the military junta (Derge) in Ethiopia. It was believed that he was killed by military junta ordered by Megistu haile mariam the master minded of his disappearance and abduction. Among his great work “ Oromai is his masterpiece, he also wrote half-a-dozen more books on different subject matters which can be found in Ethiopia and around the World.

This is not enough for what he did to this country. He deserves more, especially the government and those who struggle for the freedom of press have forgotten him.

I really think be’alu as the most prolific ethiopian writer of all the time, he is author of authors, he was the profet of the ethiopian renaissance, he was peaceful struggler who gives us his precious life. But his legacy will continue. THIS MAY NOT BE ENOUGH FOR INEDIBLE MEMORIES HE LEFT IN THE HEART OF EVERY HABESHA.
