Michaih nominated for Kora

Ethiopian singer Michaih Behaylu will compete against Kenyan and Ugandan singers for the Best Artiste in East Africa at Kora Music Award for her song, Delelegn(Seduce me).

According to the official website of Kora, Michaih will battle it out with Ugandan Suzan Kerunen, Astar and Bluz and Kenyan Wahu who are all nominated for the Award. The singer will be travelling to Benin tomorrow for a preliminary auditon.

The founder of the Kora music Award, the Bennie Ernest Coovi Adjovi, announced final lists for the 2008 edition, which will take place from 27 to 27 December in Nigeria.

Ethiopians have been conspicuously absent from the Kora Award, which is often criticized for favoring the southern African countries. This year the Award has moved to Nigeria from South Africa, where it has been staged for 10 years.

R.Kelly, an American R “n” B star, the Benin singer Angelique Kidgo, comedian Will Smith and rapper Wycliffe Jean will be present to hand out the ceremony for the outstanding musicians.

Brought up in Addis Ababa, Micaih begun singing at an early age. Her father bought her a small piano when she was a child that lifted up her passion to perform. Her first public performance was at the Betelehm School where she sang Chachi Tadesse’s and Aster Girma’s hit songs.

Her debut album, “Shemametew” on 2007 was a hit and put her among those recognized Ethiopian singers. She is able to convey a wide range of emotion in her songs and her voice has lots of shading and soulful ring that sets her apart from other vocalists.A graduate from the Addis Ababa University’s Ethiopian Languages and Literature Department, Michaih has written all the lyrics for the album except two songs that she has co-written with Amanuel Yilma.

Kora was launched in 1996 with a view to unite Africans through the celebration of music excellence. Over 1,000 artists have been nominated for Kora with nearly 200 having been presented with statutes. Tsedenia Gebremarkos was winner of the 2004 Best East African Female

Are these people doing this for “quota mamwaya” or because they know not what they are doing?! I doubt I have heard a more pretentious voice than this girls’. Don’t even get me started on the lyrics! Can’t wait to see who they are going to nominate next. “Degmeh teyiQegn” perhaps :s
