Serkalem wants her car back
Jailed journalist and dissident internet activist Eskinder Nega’s wife, Serkalem Fasil is seeking the return of a car that her husband was driving at the time of his arrest. Serkalekm told Fitih, an Amharic weekly, that her car is unlawfully being held by the Federal Police. Eskinder was driving the car to pick up his child from school before he was stopped and placed under arrest. The car was impounded since, Serkalem told the paper. “I told police officers that I hold title to the car in my name, but they were not willing to return it saying they have still to investigate the matter,” she was quoted as saying. The police officers also reportedly said they did not take the car from her.Though the government says Eskinder was arrested for involvement in a terrorism plot, it is widely believed some of his latest writings, including a column criticizing the government’s arrest of the famed Ethiopian actor Debebe Eshetu on terrorism charges, triggered his arrest. Serkalem herself is a journalist and former publisher who was imprisoned along with other reporters during the May 2005 elections. While in Kaliti prison, she gave birth to a son in June 2006.
