Selome/Addis Journal

Many people who find $ 500 lying on the floor might be tempted to keep it in their pockets. But an Ethiopian airport worker decided to “do the right thing” instead.
A young woman named Selome Getachew who works for the Ethiopian Revenues and Custom Authority Bole Airport Branch honestly retuned $ 500 that a passenger lost on the floor of the stand where she was declaring passengers’ currency.
Eskinder Merhatsidak, public relation officer at the Revenues Authority told Addis Journal that Selome who has worked for the Authority for the past eight months was alone when she found the money on the floor in one of her night assignments. Instead of pocketing the cash, Selome brought it straight to her immediate boss and the airport bank, where officers counted it and determined its authenticity. Days later, the Airlines received an e-mail letter from a woman passenger in Ghana who reported about the missed money. The passenger was notified that her money was found and was returned to her afterwards. The passenger was very grateful and wrote a thank you letter to the Airlines and Selome saying, “Ethiopians are honest people.” Pleased with the worker, the Ethiopian Airlines wrote a letter of gratitude to Selome, saying she was a source of pride to the Airlines and the country and awarded her with free round tickets to travel to any parts of the country with any person she wishes too.

Good story. I would like find everywhere people like Selome.

  3. September 17, 2009 at 11:38 am

good job. you represented the whole country.

  4. September 17, 2009 at 11:01 pm

“God bless her, good story and good job”, you guys are kidding. She is a full for returning $500.00. She is probably making less than $100 per month but she return $500.
Some one probably saw her that why she the money. What she got for returning $500, one lousy letter, God. She is probably regretting for returning the money. This is my honest opinion, but “Ethiopian are hones people”, please, this is bull.

Behailu What did your parents teach you?. You idiot, you are not supposed to keep what doesn’t belong to you. Nobody saw her , it is about integrity. You are not supposed to be honest when people watch you, don’t forget the fact that God watches our every move. You are such a fool, if you have been taking what doesn’t belong to you, you are certainly a thief. LEBA, someday you will be found and prosecuted and you will learn your lesson the hardest way. Selome, keep up the good work, don’t be discouraged by cowards like this guy.

Beheilu:-I hope you don’t have a day job that requires codes of conduct. We’ve plenty of you “Yemenged Leba”. I cannot believe that you’re rewarding bad behaviors. My advice to you is that STAY AWAY FROM KIDS. You’re a bad guy.

  7. September 18, 2009 at 4:00 pm

martha and juru, please stop preaching me (us) about good and bad behavior or integrity, OK. Juru you call me “yemenge Leba” LOL, this is a good.
Yes, for you and me we can try to live with “integrity” in our day to day life, because we are not worried about our next meal. But, this girl who can’t afford a decent meal return $500. For me she is insane, and she needs to go to Ammanuel Hospital, OK

This behailu guy is either an idiot or an attention seeker who thinks he is funny! You just have to ignore idiots like him who make the name “black” equal to petty thieves and gangsters. The likes of him, let alone return a lost object, here in the states they are dishonoring the Ethiopians because of their drug dealership and burglary; read the recent news.

God bless the girl! We need more honest people like her. Not some crooks like the idiot above. I feel sorry for anyone hiring him coz cannot be trusted with such a garbage mentality.

  17. September 23, 2009 at 10:34 pm

I live in Sweden, once I lost my wallet with my credit card, around 400 dollars worth of money, my ids, etc… two hours later, I get a call from a teenage girl who found my wallet. She found my business card and called me, we agreed to meet and I got my wallet and everything intact. She even refused my offer for a coffee because she said, anybody would have done the same.

Eventhougth the story is nice, as “asni” says, by reporting this story, you are making it look like a very rare act. I would do the same, and all of my friends will do the same…if it was 500,000..well, then you have got a story worth telling !:-)

Everyone should do the same and it is not the amount of money we are talking about, it is about integrity, doing things right when no one is watching you. You live in Sweden, what are you trying to say, she lives in Ethiopia. Returning this money makes her more credible, do you have any idea how life is in Ethiopia at this time, Teff Meto kilo is over a thousand birr. Reality hasn’t gotten to you yet Debebe or DeDebe , It is indeed a rare act in Ethiopia nowadays, not that Ethiopians are not honest people but circumstances has compromised their integrity. This teenager deserves respect and admiration not because of the amount of money but because of her action despite the circumstances surrounding her.

This man by the name behailu must be a feathe-light creature. Light as he is, I did not capitalize the first letter of his name. He is just behailu, not Behailu

That’s an interesting story really! It’s getting harder to find someone like Selome this days though there are still more like her’s.The point is we shouldn’t let anybody like Beahilu discourage such honest ones.He is one of those paethetic people who think they are smart, trying to get things at the expense of others. Selome you deserve praise for what you have done Keep up the good work & you will get your reward soon, dear.

In the first place what motivated Salome is not clear. Is it the fear of losing her job, the fear of a God, a heavenly reward etc… In a country where there is dire poverty people can’t afford to be naive as Salome. After all in a country of MAJIRAT MECHIS and all kinds of thieves we as Ethiopians know we or anybody else can not regard us as honest people or as thieves. The image of our country is tarnished by recurrent famines and so on.
The Airline made a fool out of her by giving her a round trip ticket to any destination.Well where can she go and who covers the extra costs for a low paid young lady is clear to all.It is like awarding a fish theatre tickets.LOL.
Ato Debebe from Sweden do you know that ”St.Sweden” as seen by many, is the fourth largest arms dealer to third world countries? How many of us has heard a single protest against this act of savagery? NONE. So the teenager from Sweden probably never needs your 400$ since her country profits huge sums of money from arms dealing. It IS THE RICHEST NATIONS that steal the POOREST ones.So where in the World do you hypocrites see Ethics? At least Behailu is more honest than most of you, not to say the least that you probably wouldn’t have done what that foolish girl did.

  28. November 2, 2009 at 6:05 am

please solome, you are lying me. If you do such kind of charity i love you so much. that is all . God blesses you. keep it up.

But i have one question. That is, what is your monthly salary by current time? What about your monthly income other than wage? Please solome respond to me this.

    Thank You

  29. November 2, 2009 at 5:08 pm

“…giving her a round trip ticket to any destination..” LOL. She doesn’t look like some who came from a well to do family, I am just guessing here, instead she looks like she came from a lower class family and can’t afford to fly any were she wants (don’t take me wrong I was born and raised in Merkato). So, it is more practical if they give her round trip ticket, by bus, to any destination.
Z ‘Arada, thanks to your support.

I barely believe Behailu’s gues is right ‘ she came from a lower class family’. Rather she may earn above the average Ethiopian salary. If she were from a lower class family, she hardly believe her luck and immediately she might have paid it for house rent.

    December 21, 2009 at 3:09 pm

I admired her.She is the best of best.she shows honesty is grater than any thing eals. she is a very stroning& entellgent girl.God bless you. you beilieive with out any hestating you will get your rewared from youer God while the heaven open & Juses christ come to give the rewared those who did good. such type of employee needed now to develop ouer country Ethiopia.I wish to you good Luck in your life.

Well I have good experience of honest Ethiopians. Once I went to a souk in the bush to buy cigarettes and payed with a 10 birr note instead of 1 birr. I was just going to drive away when the shop owner came running and said I paid to much. Another time I wanted to buy a Fanta from the train window in Nazareth but had no change. The boy said I can run and change it for you. The train was almost leaving for Addis when the boy came running with the change and the Fanta.
