Capturing the Moment

IMG_0336
This photo taken by Anteneh Aklilu, a photo reporter for the Amharic weekly Negadras, has won a prize in a competition organized by the Foreign Correspondent’s Association with the sponsorhip of French and American Embassies.
The photo was taken at a rally held in Addis on April 14 to call for the release of CUDP’s chair, Bertukan Mideksa. Here, the initiator of the rally, Professor Mesfin Woldemaryam with his not-yet-lit cigar and lighter is hugging Dr. Negaso Gidada, former president, who is manifestly radiating with smile.
The photo which taken by a small digital camera was chosen among 20 entries, some by photographers with better credential and sophisticated cameras, like those of the Fortune and the Reporter.
Anteneh was given a professional Nikon D-90 camera worth 16,000 Birr at a ceremony held at Alliance Ethio-Francaise on Wednesday June 10, 2009.

The second picture also by Anteneh was taken during Tilahun’s Gessesse’s funeral, described by some as the greatest gathering of people in the history of Ethiopia. Sections of people cut from the main crowd at Meskel Square scuffle with the police. A vacant place is left in the middle by the blockages and a federal police is seen threatening the crowd with his baton stick.

arefaine, Tilahun’s funeral will be the ‘greatest gathering of people in the history of Ethiopia’ only in the history of funeral gatherings otherwise there are gatherings such as the Miazia 30, 1997 EC and the one during the Ethiopian revolution of the 1966 EC which outnumber that of Tilahun’s.

    Poor Negaso!
One of the all time phonies this country has ever seen. Just a one-term goof.

    Good pictures!
Nice to know that both Mesfin and Negaso are healthy enough to take part in the rally.

    Good for them.

Oromo’s and Amhara’s have so much in common, Tebab biheretena’s exist among all ethnic groups. We should all try to get along and condemn ethnicity. A united stronger Ethiopia made of all ethinc groups is what we should build. Professor Mesin with unlit cigarette in his hand, what a picture. What was the gathering in 1966, was it TILAHUN GIZAW’S funeral, I want to know.
