Reactions to Teddy Afro’s sentence

A day after the six year sentence on Teddy Afro, reactions are coming from various corners. There is bitterness among the general public the sentence was unfair as the evidence presented by the court wasn’t sufficient to prove Teddy’s guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt” and Teddy is simply paying the price for defiance than the alleged crime. Meanwhile, others who sympathize with the regime seem satisfied with the sentence. In some online discussions, their overwhelming arguments seem to be no one is above the law and Teddy should get the term that the law requires. Teddy Afro’s lawyer Amha Bedlu said he was profoundly disappointed by the verdict and indicated there are plans to appeal. “Justice was not served; Teddy is innocent of all charges. We will appeal the ruling.” He told Ethio-Channel, an Amharic weekly.

Another lawyer who followed the case closely said that, “We expected some better evidence, something more convincing-but it wasn’t there.”

Owner of Nahom records, Elyas Fikru said that he was on the road when he heard the verdict and it was an emotional moment that sent him into cry. “It was us who distributed Teddy Afro’s music all over the world. We had a close friendship. He is a wonderful person. I admire him hugely. Putting him in prison cell for six years at this productive age is heart wrenching. Nahom Records like to express its deepest feelings to Teddy and his families and promise to be there whenever we were required too.”

Tamrat Desta, an Amharic vocalist told Ethio-Channel that he was ‘really, really’ sad.” It is always depressing to hear about any person’s prison term, let alone a sensitive and susceptible artist like Teddy. But since Teddy is a strong-spirited person and someone with a personal faith, this I believe would make him more strong and creative. He won’t fall into grief and hopelessness.”

Prof. Alemayehu G.Maraim told Ethiomedia that he was not surprised to hear Teddy was ‘convicted’ in Meles Zenawi’s kangaroo court. “I predicted long ago that he would be “convicted.” Logically, Zenawi had no choice but to convict him. After all, Teddy is the ultimate musical symbol of Ethiopian unity. His songs foster Ethiopian unity and reconciliation. His music was a bridge — an arch — across ethnic and religious lines.

In Zenawi’s Bantustan, that is sacrilege as you know. Zenawi had to jail Teddy because he wants to send a message to other Ethiopian artists who may dare to criticize his dictatorship; and if they do, he will use his make-believe court to brutalize them as well.

The fact of the matter is that Teddy may be in jail but his music and his spirit are free. Teddy is with us every moment. We listen to his music when we are happy or sad, when we are down and when we are up. He sings for us everyday in our cars, homes and offices. Teddy’s spirit is with us all. Let us celebrate this young hero. Let us honor him by continuing his work and supporting his cause: Ethiopian unity and reconciliation. I will honor him by doing just that.”

I am writing this comment in a deep sad feeling! Teddy is and will be a role model for me and many young Ethiopians. He was an inspiration for many of us. My heart is broken because of the injustice of the Ethiopian legal system and corrupted government! How long are we going to go like this? for how many decades again will our mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers would have to cry by the TPLF desciminatory governance? This punishement is not only imposed on Teddy but to many Ethiopians.

The comment from the prof. is worth looking into.

We shall have to celebrate him and prove that such convictions won’t make Teddy’s spirit die. Let’s be with him and refect his agony is ours. Ethiopians have been expressing their feelings in several unexpected occasions that the government couldn’t predict nor stop. We couldn’t fight with them, nor can we face them with force. But we still can keep Teddy’s spirit alive for 6yrs by keeping his messages and musics as new as it were. Look at what happened on election 05′, it has been around 4yrs since it occurs. They were succesfull to erase our polls from the stations but not from our minds. The same could happen for this young man, We could honor him, and make him strong, make him know that our heart is still waiting for him. 6yrs is not the end of his life, he is a young man, he has lots of time to replenish his deeds!! Let’s show we are wiser than our leaders! Ja Yastesertyal!!

hit and run i.e life of an innocent person lost. have some sympathy for the victim.. don’t make everything political. so what he is famous… he should be treated like everyone. i for am a big fan of teddy and his lyrical ability… but at thy end of the day the man needed to be put in check.. his verdict will not bring back the person he killed!!

if any of you lost one of ur relatives in hit and run… am sure ur opinions will change.

It is a sad day in ethiopia. I am a big fan of teddy afro and was shocked but not surprised to hear the verdict. IF he is guilty of the crime then why did he get only 6 years instead of 10-17 years that was predicted. I think its to silence him from the upcaming election so the woyane goverment can retain power. SAd SAd day.. long live teddy we luv you

Yes, “Teddy’s spirit is with us all. Let us celebrate this young hero. Let us honor him by continuing his work and supporting his cause: Ethiopian unity and reconciliation.” That is exactly what I will be doing (all peace loving Ethiopia should be doing).
    Long live Teddy !!
    WE LOVE YOU !!

wow wow wow! it is so amazing to me how we Ethiopian are so far away from reality. let’s try to separate the facts from myths…
First, Teddy is a great artist who transformed/contributed to the music industry a great deal. in return he made a fortune and a name for himself. – I ain’t mad at him! good job. but that is that!
Second teddy was imprisoned on the terms of hit-and-run allegedly killing another ‘helpless’ human being. Now if his witness and reasoning has proven to be correct he will be released if not he ought to legally responsible to the man he performed vehicular homicide.
Now, if we choose bypass the fact that he killed someone on the mere alignment of him as a role model is totally senseless. We should be asking our conscious what exactly makes a role model… because someone is able to stir our dull emotion with beats and words and phrases … we just don’t claim that person to be a hero hence to give him a refugee from all responsibilities…

I personally don’t think teddy’s rubbing off with the government has caused his incarceration. if teddy is in the truth side, believe you me! the truth shall set him free. else he has to be responsible.

on a slight different note, how come we Ethiopians are so angry about Teddy’s situation but NOT mad at our current naked impoverished state of existence? it is amazing to me how we can be so complacent about the ever beggar, hunger stricken way of life of millions in our nation? but, teddy’s imprisonment is such a shocking life impact moment of truth! ( PLEASE!)
that is our hypocrisy! How I wish if we have a tiny bit of zeal to be a part of the development of this nation? how I wish we have a deep sense of shame on the state of existence our citizens has to live every day? well we choose the easy way out, which doesn’t require any action at all! we blame the government!

how I wish we wake up and honestly challenge ourselves beyond the shallow “my way or the highway” arrogant attitude that shadows our logical reasoning?
HOW I WISH WE HAVE HALF THE COURAGE WE ARE SHOWING FOR TEDDY’S CAUSE TO THE MILLION’S WAY OF SURVIVAL IN THAT BARREN LAND OF OURS! HOW I WISH!

ethiomind…well said!!! compeletly agree with everything, its on point!!!

“long live teddy” u people make me sick!

RIP to the homeless person that died!

more album will come out of his experiece…soo all the “big fans” am sure 6yrs will be worth the wait! i for one think he should have been sentenced more than 6years! Will make a good example out of him!

Hit and Run in Ethiopia is like the norm now… i think people see it as the actuall law…i.e if you hit the law says run run run!

How rediculous! Everybody is below the law.True! But everybody should get a fair justice! whether sounding or not this is also true. Our hero Teddy is deprived from justice. That’s what itching! he is our real hero who speaks what is dwelled in our heart. He is our real hero who stands for the the unity of Ethiopia! He is our real star! we won’t forget him! We’re always with him! And we will keep showing that! God bless you Teddy!

    Dear Ethiomind, Suzi and freedom.

When Teddy was arrested, I kept an open mind: “Let us see the evidence before judging”, I said.

Now the evidence has been presented. 1) Teddy Afro normally uses a driver. 2) NOBODY has seen Teddy at the steering wheel hitting anyone. 3) The supposed cab driver who recorded the number plate of Teddy’s car hitting someone disappared and never never appeared in court. 4) No physical evidence linked Teddy’s car to the victim. 5) The victim was shown by the autopsy to have died one day before. 6) The autopsy revealed no injuries to the dead body consistent with being hit by a car.

Add to this a well-established fact, that throughout the country political opponents of the current Ethiopian regime go to prison for all kinds of trumped-up charges, and that Teddy Afro had incurred the wrath of many in the ruling clique for his “qumta” reference, and this sentence to six years should at least cause you to doubt and feel some discomfort.

Hey friends, please don’t be confused with what you don’t know!!!! Teddy can be a good Mucician but this can not be a cause to be immune of being acused for the crime he does. You can appriciate his work but you can not ignore that poor street child who lost his life. We all need to be aware that whenever it comes to our own family, I am sure the reaction is totally different from this.
