Awra Amaba Times faces court

The editor in chief and deputy editor of the weekly Awra Amba Times have been summoned to appear before court on November 26, 2008. Dawit Kebede and Wondiyrad Debretsion are accused of ‘libel’, “malicious propaganda’ and ‘publishing false news” over an interview they published on March 4, 2008.

In the interview, Dr. Yakob Woldemariam questioned about the legitimacy of a party led by Aylele Chamiso to whom his party lost the name, Kinjit. But why the paper is being charged for a view that isn’t even its own is beyond comprehension. It seems part of an ongoing campaign to silence the  the nascent private press.

Awra Amba Times, a paper with a wide readership, has been warned before over ‘its regular coverage of Dr. Berhabu Nega’s party, Ginbot 7’.

Despite criticism from home and abroad, several journalists are facing charges in one or another of the courts.
