US Embassy and Awra Amba Times

September 16, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

Awra Amba Times, an Amharic weekly, this morning published a belated letter of correction from the American Embassy for an article it carried on July 22.

The letter expressed the Embassy’s displeasure with the story published in the paper where the Ambassador, Donald Yamamato was unfairly criticized over a remark he never made. The article which the paper says was taken from Ginbot 7 party’s publication contained the views of Dr. Berhanu Nega crticising the American Ambassador over an alleged remark he made in local paper, which says that “the opposition parties should accept that the Election Board is free and they must promise to participate in the coming election”. The Embassy says the Ambassador never made such specific statements and demanded that they would be retracted.

Awra Amba times responded saying that it only re-published what was written in the party’s publication which in turn used the interview the Ambassador gave to Addis Admas. So, any correction should be made there.

But what is not clear is why it took so long to for Awra Amba Times to publish the correction, which sources at the Embassy say was sent on July 23rd.
