Drought returns to haunt Ethiopia

This story from Reuters  says a recent drought in Ethiopia has caused a food crisis and 126,000 children are suffering from severe malnutrition. 6 million Ethiopian children under the age of five may be at risk of malnutrition, according to the story. That figure is more than a mere stastistic.

Yet there is a conspiracy of silence on the part of the Ethiopian government and its media that seem to be more concerned about artifical image than the plight of those vulnerable children.

The children who are dying of needless malnutrition are also victims of shameful neglect. As the late Martin Luther King once said, most of us will not have to repent of any great crimes, but simply of the apathy which stopped us from doing anything.

Siraro, May 19 (Reuters)- Ethiopian mother Ayantu Tamon has lost a child to hunger every year for the last four and now cradles her severely malnourished and weakened three-year-old son Hirbu in her arms.

“I just hope God lets him live,” she says. “I have only two children left.”

Hirbu is being fed by drip at Rophi Catholic Church in Siraro, a remote farming area 350 km (220 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa.

You know, literally, my heart dropped to my stomach when i heard about this. I don’t know what can be done to get out of this vicious cycle…and what my role is, as an individual.

It makes me sick to witness another draught to my beloved Ethiopia. What do we expect a minority and dictatorial government, silence and denial.

LET THE GRACE OF GOD BE IN ETHIOPIA. AS AN ETHIOPIAN IT GIVES SUCH UNCONFORTABLE FEELING TO HEAR ABOUT MY OWN CITIZENS SUFFERING. I BELIEVE PRAYER WILL SOLVE ALL THESE…

I too feel sad when large number of people have to die of starvation and few have to fatten their axx! The Lord has given us a beautiful land and whatever is happening is created by man! So enough of raising our hands to the Lord better make accountable the so called government in power. How can a country ask million dollars aid funding for arms while its people are starving of hunger! Time to let this government go and place it with the one that belogns to the people. If the Lord is their, that is what he should give us. A government of the people!
