Eyob Mekonnen’s new CD

Eyob

It was my colleague Selam who brought Eyob Mekonen’s CD to our office a week ago. And since the day I’ve discovered it, I’ve fallen under its spell. I loved this CD. I loved every second of it.

The debut from this deadlocked, heavily Bob-Marley influenced singer is beautiful and inventive.  It is a lovely record of alternately soulful, reggae and traditional Ethiopian folk.

I also enjoyed its brilliant poetic sensibility. The lyrics are very much personal statements reflecting his experience on matters of the heart, be it praising his lover who doesn’t have a shiny looks but has a manner that outranks all other good-looking ladies in ‘Debzezesh’ or how crestfallen he became after his lover told friends and acquaintances that he was a nagging type when he tried to forward her advises for her own good in ‘Yemedir Dirshaye’.

The opener ‘Nekchalehu’ written by Elyas Melka seems like a gratitude to God fro helping him to transform into a better person after having a tumulus life. It comes as honey-sweetened and easy to swallow.

Elyas’s instrumental contributions are found in every of the track but he has also lend in composing more than seven lyrics.

Joining him with vocals is Zeritu Kebede on one of the tracks, “yene konjo’, a romantic duet. Gossaye Tesfaye and Haile Root have also helped with the melody. The bass player, Fasil Wuhib gave it a special twist to suit to the instruments.

The final track and the album’s title, ‘Man ende kal’ (Nothing like a promise) ends the album on an uplifting note. A fitting final to an emotional journey.

They say it took Eyob around four years to do this album. I would hate to think that you would have to suffer great pain to make great music, but on the evidence here it sure does help.

I’m thankful for Selam for making me discover such a fabulous album.

i like him a normal amount. He is good but forgettable as well. he has some freshness to him but he did not have a lasting impression on me…i have kind of a mixed feeling about him. He seems a sweet human being though.

Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow WWowow Wow Wow Wow
I want to thank this gentle man for giving us such a wonderful gift for the Millennium and It’s a great breakthrough to Ethiopian music. I think it was Teddy Afro who showed a very new style to Ethiopian singers and many have learnt from him but there were still many things that they lacked and I think the right time to fill what they lacked has come and it is this young man who has strived to fill this gap and succeeded. So many of our singers can take a good lesson from him and do something better.I really like his music because they are food for the soul.and I wish we could have more like him who could entertain real music lovers.

Except a few individals from the above comments, you all owe me. After i read you guys opinion, i bought his CD and my love for his music lasts for a few hrs. I kept only the first song in my ipod (in case, if i need it ).

It’s encouraging to see Ethiopian musicians leaving the main stream style and expermenting, creating something new, though. Thumbs up!

i am not much into nongospel music but i love music as an art conveying strong social issues. i also dont get impressed by most of the current artists exept few who do music not just for the sake of money. i found eyob’s album on of the few (i can say 5) clasic albums iin the past fifteen years. it is unexpectedfrom a debue. go eyob and thank you for raising the sprit of the nation’s musical dymamics and raising real social and somehow spritual issues. peace jah bless.

Hey, this is a real art. I don’t think I ever heard such a good (art full) music. I don’t listen Ethiopian music a lot. But I heard one of the songs on the internet, and now I wanna buy the CD so bad. And I am not a CD buying type guy. I don’t remember the last time I bought a CD. This guy have done a good job. I am so picky, and yet I can find no remark on this music. I hope the rest of the CD will be the same way. I read that it took him about 4 years to finish this album. Wow, good things don’t come easy. I hope we will hear more from Eyobe. First, I have to find this album, though. My problem is I don’t live in Ethiopia.

I like this album. Great Job, by far the most solid Ethiopian reggae album. What I like most about this album is that it has stayed true to the integrity of our language and incorperated great sound. Keep up the good work.

Hey, is anybody know where this guy lives? I heard that he perfomes live every Saturday. If he lives in the US, Canada, or somewhere in Europe, I will go see him. Please let me know if U have any idea. Apparently where I live, no one knows about him. I feel like I live in the middle of nowhere, and I tried to do some research on internet. There is nothing about him. How is that So?

    Jarso
Eyob is niether in the US, Canada, or Europe, he is now in Addis.
If you can, get someone to send you his CD.
by the way, he is just an ordinary singer.you made it look like you are talking about Elvis or something.

  33. Jarso
    August 20, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Thanks Sen, I got his CD. I just wanna see him perfome. I like his CD a lot. Well, this is the age of the internet. Somebody need to put some stuff about him (his agent or somebody close to him or himself). Especially, if he lives in the West, something is expected on the web. It is not a big deal. If u google my name, u would be able to find anything that has been published about me, and I am nobody. This is a comment for him, too. He need to advertise himself. He just got an album for heaven’s sake. If he is not already big, he got the potential. His songs are exceptional. Thanks for the info, again.
